Summer often ends just as quickly as it begins. This year, we found a place that seemed to celebrate that fleeting feeling at every turn: Québec City.

While exploring this historic city and its surrounding areas, including Île d’Orléans and Limoilou, we were amazed by the colourful details woven into the region’s landmarks. From historic eighteenth-century homes to the iconic wrought-iron spiral staircases of the more modern apartments, we found pops of colour, with each edifice holding its own unique style.

In the port town of Vieux-Québec, we found windowsills painted red, yellow, and blue. In the modern borough of Limoilou, the iconic triplex apartments with winding stairs did not shy away from standing apart. We saw steps painted orange, blue, and rich browns.

Whether we were walking the grand promenade past office buildings in the city centre or sitting in the backyard of a quaint farm on the nearby island, florals were planted everywhere, curated and cultivated – a photographer’s dream. Locals told us the region experienced a lot of rain this summer. The humidity and moisture from the summer’s rainfall made the green landscape appear almost luminescent, and the natural plant life along the trails grew high and wild.

The vibrant botanicals and painted windowsills flowed with the natural landscape. These details did not compete with the luminous greens or the distant mountains. Instead, they echoed them. Bright reds and yellows complemented the warm hues of the locally grown produce, and the shades of blue reflected the endless skies.

Through the lenses of our cameras, our travels to Québec became a study of how colour can preserve a season. These bright details still linger as the seasons begin to change.  This collection became our way of holding onto that feeling – the colours, textures, and quiet summer details, preserved in print.
