An Autumn Tune

It was rush hour, but I was in the company of some of my favourite songwriters: Joni, Robbie, Gordon, and Leonard. The end of each track bringing hope that the rest of my subway journey would continue without delay. Three stops in, the train decided to break to a halt. I was still eight stops from home, and my mind began to race; I wondered, with fury, what on earth could be causing the delay. How much longer was I going to be stuck in this tunnel?

But these thoughts were to my surprise, short-lived. Because, I got distracted by the lyrics of The Band’s, "The Weight", which echoed through my headphones. Entranced by the music during a twenty-minute delay.

Once the train started moving, I felt relief. Not that the train’s mechanical delay had ended, but that I didn’t let things that were out of my control get to me. I didn’t waste my energy. And as we neared my stop, I made my way towards the door. Right in front of me, a passenger held a bag with a Leonard Cohen quote right on the front. I couldn’t believe it. "You Want it Darker" had just played on my playlist. A coincidence that gave me a boost of energy and joy. It made me smile.

Such a small, seemingly insignificant anecdote, which I might have overlooked if I was in a bad mood. It got me to thinking about energy. How we have the power to choose the energy we exert as well as the energy we conserve. It made me think of the forest.

I’ve spent the past few days wandering through some of my favourite hiking trails and I feel the change in energy all around me with the start of the fall season. The leaves have begun to fall to the earth, to help nourish the soil throughout the winter. The sun hits the tree line later in the day, signalling to the forest that longer nights, and cooler temperatures are coming. Creatures forage to store up their food for the winter. In these observations, I find light in the darkness. It makes me realize how connected we are. Had I chosen to let the long commute get under my skin, I would have wasted precious energy.

I’d rather save it for those little moments of joy. The fallen leaves, beloved songwriters, and watching how the light changes between seasons.
