When we thought about our photography goals for 2025, the one word that seems to summarize our objectives is: expand.

It’s a concept which seems impossible in the bleak days of January. Snow is ample, but fleeting. The skyline grey and flat, with the dark of night ever present. It is throughout the month of January, year after year, that Rod and I consider this month a time to refocus and warm-up our creative process for the year ahead.

Never before have these warm-up weeks of January been so literal. We have been balancing the picturesque snowfall mornings in the great outdoors, while reserving warm indoor spaces for the grey days. Nothing is more inspiring than a change of scenery, even if it’s just a short drive away - like this tranquil community greenhouse.

That is the magic of January. It’s a time for experimentation, which really sets us up on a creative path for the year. We don’t expect much in terms of compositions during this month, but when we find a rare bit of vibrance, we feel that spark of creativity.

So what are our goals for this year? In keeping with our mantra expand, our first goal is to zoom out. Last year, we leaned in, taking note of every detail, every moment. This year we want to apply everything we’ve learned over the past few years and step back with more wide angle focal lengths. Easier said than done. My comfort zone is within the 50mm - 60mm range, but over the past few weeks, I’ve been getting out of my comfort zone using a wide angle lens.

Our next goal is to hike farther distances in unfamiliar places. In looking back at our work, we often restricted ourselves to familiar woodland landscapes. This year, we want to chase horizons, grand vistas, and expand our vantage point. While we don’t have the proper gear (yet!) for hiking in the bitter cold of January, that doesn’t mean we can’t start training. January is a great time for us to reset our fitness routines, and build up our endurance for the hiking plans we have for spring, summer, and autumn.

Our third goal for this year is to continue to build our Print Collection with inspiring prints that speak to you. We will be creating a new series designed for a gallery wall, using neutral tones, but also keeping with our moody style. We typically start adding new work to our Print Collection by the late spring, but we'll be sharing updates along the way!

There’s a lot of planning and action items we have in the works behind the scenes, but we are not rushed. For now, we’re letting January be that time to refresh - allowing ourselves to take a step back and let that pop of inspiration find us.

Stay Wild,

Meg & Rod
