Waves

It’s in the sound of the waves where we can drown out the noise. Over the past few years, the waves are where we have found balance.

We started Rome Wild Photography back in 2021. During that time, we couldn’t get to the sea. And so, with our camera gear we imagined far-off lands through the lens. The detailed brick of a nearby building could be relics of an ancient city. The golden hour sunlight that poured through the Toronto ravines became the mystical setting of a favourite novel. And the waves of Lake Ontario, reminded us of the sea.

Many seasons have passed since the start of our photography adventures, and in that time, we have been fortunate to travel, exploring both new and familiar landscapes through photography.

What we’ve come to realize is that the shorelines of Lake Ontario, though just a short commute away, remain so dear to us. They help remind us that while life can feel like a noisy, hectic, whirlwind, we can still escape to a place of calm.

Be it the sounds of the gulls in the early morning hours fishing for their breakfast, or watching the sunrise over the shoreline. Maybe it’s just the waves themselves. On still days, the waves will scarcely make a sound. With wind, they will roar across the shoreline with each splash. Whether it’s their furious or mild mannered state, one can’t ignore their dance. They will always invite us into the quiet.

‘Waves’ is the title for our 2023 Collection. The collection includes a series of shorelines along Lake Ontario we photographed over the past few months in Toronto, Ontario. We wanted to make this collection representative of finding little moments of calm and that one doesn’t have to venture too far to find it. Sometimes, it’s just the lyrics to a familiar song, or the smell of a freshly brewed cup of coffee. Maybe it’s the feeling of the damp earth on your palms as you plant your favourite flowers. Whatever it may be, we hope this series invites you into the quiet too.
